Katharine Knowlton receives the Hoard’s Dairyman Youth Development Award

Champaign, IL (June 3, 2020)—The American Dairy Science Association® (ADSA®) is pleased to announce Katharine Knowlton as the 2020 recipient of the Hoard’s Dairyman Youth Development Award. Knowlton will be recognized during the virtual ADSA Annual Meeting.

The Hoard’s Dairyman Youth Development Award was created to recognize a candidate who has had significant involvement in dairy-related youth activities in either a professional or volunteer capacity for a minimum of 10 years. The recipient shall be highly regarded in the dairy industry for his or her role in personal development of dairy youths and for enhancing knowledge of and interest in the dairy industry. The winner need not be a member of ADSA and may have worked with youths of any age, up to and including college, in many possible capacities, such as coach, counselor, teacher, adviser, mentor, chaperone, or supervisor.

Katharine Knowlton, a professor of dairy science at Virginia Tech, is enthusiastic about teaching and mentoring young people, including 4-Hers, FFA members, and college students. Knowlton is the curriculum coordinator for the Department of Dairy Science and is academic advisor to an average of 40 undergraduates per year. Knowlton has served as advisor to 6 PhD students, 10 MS students, and 4 post-doctoral researchers. A highly successful collegiate dairy judging team coach, she coached winning teams at the National Intercollegiate Dairy Cattle Judging Contest on four occasions. She has also developed a highly sought-after workshop for youth, Dairy Judging 101.
