Champaign, IL (June 1, 2023)—The American Dairy Science Association® (ADSA®) is pleased to announce Andres Legarra as the 2023 recipient of the J. L. Lush Award in Animal Breeding. The award will be presented on Tuesday, June 27, 2023, during the awards ceremony at the ADSA Annual Meeting in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

The J. L. Lush Award in Animal Breeding was created to recognize outstanding research in animal breeding. The winner must have done research work published in the 10 years immediately preceding the year of recognition, performed research in any area of animal breeding and genetics that had or has the potential for improvement of dairy cattle, and have been a member of ADSA for at least five years. The winner must also be a resident of the United States, Canada, or Mexico and/or formally involved in projects in collaboration with North American researchers or organizations.

Andres Legarra was born in Spain and obtained his PhD from the Universidad Publica de Navarra. He then spent a long time at the INRAE center of Toulouse, France, as the research director in the animal genetics department. Since 2023, he has worked as a senior geneticist for the Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding. Legarra works on the genetic improvement of livestock, specifically dairy cattle, with a strong emphasis on genetic evaluation, including phenotypes, pedigree, and markers. He believes in the great value of international collaborations, rigor, enthusiasm, fun, and usefulness. In his spare time, he enjoys reading, cooking, and hiking.

It is with great pleasure that ADSA and the Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding present Andres Legarra with the 2023 J. L. Lush Award in Animal Breeding.
