Champaign, IL (June 1, 2023)—The American Dairy Science Association (ADSA®) is pleased to announce that Geoffrey Smithers has been named Fellow of the American Dairy Science Association. The award will be presented on Sunday, June 25, 2023, during the opening session at the ADSA Annual Meeting in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

The purpose of the ADSA Fellow Award is to recognize Dairy Foods division and Production division members of ADSA who have rendered distinguished service to the dairy industry over 20 years or more. The recipients must have made exceptional contributions to the dairy industry, to a dairy-related discipline, or to ADSA; in addition, the recipients must be and have been a member of ADSA for a minimum of 20 years.

Geoffrey Smithers is the principal at Geoffrey Smithers Food Industry Consulting Services and an adjunct professor in the School of Chemistry at Monash University (Melbourne, Australia). He received his BAppSc (Hons I) from the University of Technology–Sydney and his PhD from the University of New South Wales (Sydney, Australia). Following appointments at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Smithers returned to Melbourne in 1988 to a research leadership position at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation. He established a program exploring the characteristics of milk proteins and peptides, novel technologies for their fractionation, and valuable applications for the resultant fractions. His “entrepreneurial flair” was key in translating this research into marketplace successes. He received the Sir Ian McLennan Achievement for Industry Medal for his achievements in dairy science and their national economic impact, and the Loftus Hills Gold Medal for excellence in dairy science. Smithers currently leads a consulting firm that provides guidance and services to dairy companies globally, and he teaches and mentors the next generation of dairy scientists at Monash University and elsewhere.

It is with great pleasure that ADSA presents Geoffrey Smithers with the 2023 Fellow of the American Dairy Science Association distinction.
