Champaign, IL (June 7, 2024)—The American Dairy Science Association® (ADSA®) is pleased to announce James Drackley as the 2024 recipient of the Zinpro Award for Excellence in Dairy Science. The award will be presented on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, during the awards ceremony at the ADSA Annual Meeting in West Palm Beach, Florida.
The Zinpro Award for Excellence in Dairy Science was created to recognize outstanding research in dairy production or manufacturing contributing to improvement or care of dairy cattle and development and improvement of processes, products, equipment, methods, handling, and sanitation. The winner must have made meritorious scientific contributions or discoveries pertaining to dairy production, manufacturing, and technology. These contributions may be published research data, plans, processes, devices, or inventions significant and beneficial to the dairy industry through either theory or practical application and may have been made while the winner was employed in public and/or private institutions and/or industry. The winner must also have published the research during the 10 calendar years immediately prior to the year of the award and must be and have been a member of ADSA for at least five successive years.
James Drackley, PhD, is a professor of animal sciences at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Drackley’s research group has made seminal discoveries of nutrition-management strategies to improve metabolic adaptation to lactation and decrease health disorders around calving in dairy cows. His concept of “controlled energy” or “Goldilocks” diets fed during the dry period has been adopted worldwide. Drackley has also published key findings on calf growth and metabolism, particularly on the effects of feeding greater amounts of milk or milk replacer. The results of Drackley’s research have improved animal well-being and producer profitability for dairy farms around the world.
It is with great pleasure that ADSA and Zinpro Corporation present James Drackley with the 2024 Zinpro Award for Excellence in Dairy Science.
