Journal of Dairy Science® Journal Impact Factor climbs to 3.7

JDS® ranks seventh by Impact Factor among Agriculture, Dairy, and Animal Science journals

Philadelphia, July 10, 2024 – According to new statistics released in Clarivate’s Journal Citation Reports™, the Journal Impact Factor for the Journal of Dairy Science (JDS) for 2023 increased to 3.7. As a measure that quantifies the average number of citations over a specific period, the Journal Impact Factor gives authors one tool among many to assess the quality of scientific journals. The new ranking validates the journal’s claim as a leading peer-reviewed general dairy research journal in the world, especially in light of the new method of calculating impact factors, which launched last year for the 2022 calculation.

In years past, the impact factor calculation was done using an article’s print or issue publication date, but Clarivate has now moved to a new calculation that uses the much-earlier electronic publication date. This new model will take several years to fully take effect, causing discrepancies between citation counts and the number of articles included in the impact factor calculation that has impacted virtually all journals.

“As the Journal of Dairy Science advances, it is gratifying to see this increase,” said Editor-in-Chief Paul Kononoff, PhD, of the University of Nebraska, “but Impact Factor is just one metric in the measurement of how we understand our impact, and—in an ever-changing scientific publishing landscape—the journal staff, editors, and reviewers remain laser-focused on ensuring our processes best serve our authors, maintaining our rigorous peer review, and remaining a transparent and essential resource for our global scientific community.”

This commitment to innovation and service has spawned two large developments for the journal in recent years. In April 2023, JDS began to streamline its production process aiming to reduce the time—from months to weeks—from acceptance to publication to ensure articles get to researchers and readers faster than ever before. As of January 2024, JDS and its sister journal, JDS Communications, launched a loyalty program for authors and reviewers to earn article publication charge discounts for their contributions to either journal.

Since 1917, JDS has been a leading platform for disseminating trusted and pioneering research in dairy production and foods, and continues to have a strong suite of impact metrics. A Journal Impact Factor of 3.7 places JDS seventh out of 80 journals in the Agriculture, Dairy, and Animal Science category (two spots ahead of 2022), which ranks JDS in the first quartile. In the Food Science and Technology category, JDS is ranked 57th out of 173 journals, placing it in the second quartile. In 2023, the journal had an impressive 66,785 citations to content published in 2021 and 2022. The journal also maintains a robust five-year Impact Factor (4.1), illustrating that articles in JDS continue to be cited and bolster research well beyond the two years after initial publication.

“Coming off a gathering of our journal’s community at the ADSA Annual Meeting held in West Palm Beach, FL, this new impact factor adds fuel to our existing fire to continue supporting our authors and readers while driving advancements in the global dairy sector feeding and supporting the world,” explained Kononoff.
